From the foothills of the Sierra Nevada we made our way to Minca, a sleepy village perched on the top of a mountain overlooking Santa Marta. We only had one night here and as a result that really limited what we were able to do, but actually we were really grateful for a couple days rest from the sticky heat of Colombia (being 660m above sea level, it was slightly cooler in Minca).
We spent the afternoon watching some locals play football and exploring the few streets that Minca has to offer. We enjoyed a really tasty lunch at The Fat Cat and a delicious latte at Caficosta - they actually have their coffee roasting plant in Minca.
Minca is also known for Pozo Azul, a collection of three swimming holes - perfect for a refreshing dip after a hike through the hills or if you are a little more adventurous, cliff jumping!
The highlight for us was the place we stayed, Casa Loma. It actually has to be one the most magical places I have ever stayed. Apart from the absolutely terrible uphill walk (almost vertical!) to get there, this place is incredible.
They have a variation of accommodation, from hammocks to private tree houses (which is where we stayed!) although you have to book in advance if you are hoping to secure one of those.
Casa Luna was our home for the night, a hut made from wood with an outdoor bathroom and the most stunning view over the Sierra Nevada. Casa Loma provide breakfast, lunch and dinner so we opted to have dinner there that evening. All food is cooked onsite, is vegetarian and is served 'family style', meaning we sat at tables with the other guests and ate together. We had sri lanken curry followed by mango sorbet! They also serve the most scrummy cocktails, which we enjoyed watching the sunset and playing cards with new found friends.
