Medellin, Colombia

Almost 25 years ago, Medellin was dubbed 'the most dangerous city on earth'. Drug lords ran the place, police were often assassinated and paramilitaries invaded the neighbourhoods. Not somewhere you would like to visit?

In 2013, Medellin was said to be 'one of the most innovative cities in the world', with creations such as the eco-arbol, a tree like structure that purifies the air and the amazing Orquideorama for growing orchids. The economy was one of the fastest growing in the world. These changes in Medellin began with one thing: the Metro. The city itself lies in a long valley between two Andean ridges. In 1994, when the Metro was constructed, it suddenly gave freedom to lots of people. The locals believe it changed the psychology of the city.

During our time in Medellin we went on a tour of Comuna 13. During the 80s and 90s, Comuna 13 was used for the transportation of cocaine and weapons as it is strategically placed on the hillside. The barrio was run by illegal groups but eventually in 2002 there was a military intervention. Over 1500 officers, 2 helicopters and a tank were used during the intervention in Comuna 13. It lasted for 3 days.

Now the barrio is a symbol of change. The houses are painted brightly and street art covers the walls. The government constructed several multi-level escalators making it easier to get around and there are several street dance companies up and running to keep the kids off the streets and out of trouble.
